Pull up your website and look at the top of the page. Chances are you’ll see a big “Call Now” button, a phone number, and maybe a contact form. That’s how contractor websites have always been built, and it’s how most homeowners have always reached you.

But homeowners have changed. A growing number would rather send a text than make a phone call, and some won’t call a business at all. If texting isn’t offered, or it’s buried at the bottom of your contact page, those homeowners may simply move on to the next company.
So here’s a question worth thinking about: what if texting was the first way people could reach you, not an afterthought?
More homeowners would rather text than call
Think about how you handle your own life. You text your kids, your crew, your suppliers. Your customers are no different.
This is especially true for younger homeowners. First-time buyers in their 20s and 30s grew up texting, and plenty of them will skip a business entirely before they’ll pick up the phone and make a cold call.
Texting also fits how homeowners deal with a foundation problem. They often notice it at night or on the weekend, when they’re not sure anyone will answer. They’re worried, and a little embarrassed they don’t know what they’re looking at. A text feels lower pressure. They can send a picture, ask a quick question, and wait for an answer without feeling like they’re being pulled into a sales pitch.
Why texting works so well for foundation contractors
A text isn’t just a different way to get the same lead. For foundation repair, it’s often a better lead.
- You get photos up front. A homeowner can send pictures of the crack, the bowing wall, the sticking door, or the water on the basement floor. You can get a sense of the problem before you ever drive out, and show up knowing what you’re walking into.
- You don’t have to stop working. When you’re under a house or setting piers, you can’t always answer the phone. A text waits until you have a minute, and you can reply between tasks instead of losing the lead or losing your focus.
- Everything is in writing. The address, the best time to come out, the photos, and what the homeowner described are all in one thread. No more scribbling an address on a receipt in the truck.
- Real estate deals move faster. Buyers and agents working against an inspection deadline need quick answers. A text thread gives them fast replies and a record of what was said.
- Following up on quotes feels less pushy. A short text asking if they had any questions about your estimate gets read. A voicemail often doesn’t. For a big repair that homeowners tend to put off, that easy follow-up can be what gets the job signed.
What a text-first website looks like
Making texting your first option doesn’t mean getting rid of your phone number. It means putting texting right up front, where homeowners see it first.
- A “Text Us” button at the top of your site. Put it right next to your phone number, or even ahead of it. When someone taps it on their phone, their messaging app opens with your number already filled in.
- A text button that follows visitors on mobile. Most homeowners find you on their phone. A button that stays at the bottom of the screen as they scroll means they can reach you the moment they’re ready.
- Messaging that invites a photo. “Text us a photo of your crack or wet basement” tells homeowners exactly what to do, and it gets you the information you need before you ever drive out.
Don’t stop at your website, either. The same “Text us a photo” message works on your trucks, yard signs, mailers, and Google Business Profile.
A few things to get right
If texting is going to be your front door, it needs to work every time. A few things matter behind the scenes.
- Use a number that can text. Not every business line can receive texts, especially landlines and older office systems. A text-enabled business number, answered from an app on your phone, keeps customer messages organized and lets others on your team help.
- Business texting has rules. In the U.S., businesses that text through software platforms generally need to register their number with the phone carriers, or messages can get filtered or blocked. Promotional texts, like seasonal offers, also require the customer’s permission first. Replying to a homeowner who texted you about their basement is a different thing from sending a marketing blast.
- Answer quickly. A text feels like a conversation, so homeowners expect a faster reply than they would from an email. Even a quick “Thanks, I’m on a job right now and will get back to you this afternoon” keeps the lead warm. Many texting systems can send that first reply automatically.
Try this today
Pull up your website on your phone and pretend you’re a homeowner who just found a crack in the basement wall. How many taps does it take to reach you? Is texting even an option? If you’d rather text than call, could you? If the only clear choice is to call, you may be turning away the homeowners who prefer to text.
